Uncertain times – Career tips

It’s a very uncertain time for us all at the moment, in particular with jobs and careers. You might be feeling uncertain about the future, but how can you use this time in a positive way to your advantage to stop, pause and reflect about what’s important to you.

Where am I now?

Is what you are doing now something you love doing, or are you in a career you really enjoy and are passionate about? Having more time to reflect and pause may mean you come to the conclusion you want to change career, or you may be facing a situation where you need to pivot and look for another career quickly and unexpectedly.

What drives me?

Once you have taken the time to pause and reflect, deciding on what drives you and what’s important will be paramount to finding the best version of yourself. What’s your guiding light inside and outside work and what makes you feel motivated?

Exploring my options

You now have an idea of where you want to go but how do you get there, what are your options? Start doing your research on websites such as Linked in. Another simple but effective idea is to write down the pros and cons of making that move. Use your networks, people you used to work with, family and friends, a quick virtual coffee or catch up could just open doors at the right time to new opportunities.

Learn, learn, learn

You now have your true north and what drives you in life, now it’s time to start developing yourself.

Take the time to think about what skills you may need for the future and how can you upskill yourself in those skills. Are there any courses you can go on, speakers you can listen to, TED talks that will inspire you? Would you consider retraining in another field?

If there are no immediate job opportunities would you consider volunteering in an area you are passionate about? If there are no face to face volunteering opportunities why not look online to see if there’s anything you can do virtually….

Build your CV

All the things I’ve talked about will be excellent to add to a CV or linked in profile. Take the time to ensure both of these are updated and are the best reflection of you.

Wellbeing

Ensure you take some time to focus on yourself and your wellbeing. Spending time with friends and family, exercising, going to your favourite restaurant or even taking short break’s in the fresh air appreciating nature will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated for the day ahead!
